Cork & Gabel Brings Bangers, Brats and Fancier Fare to Corktown, Starting Wednesday

Seating is first-come Wednesday as Cork & Gabel restaurant debuts at 2415 Michigan Ave. in Corktown. Doors open at 4 p.m.

"After numerous hurdles and delays, we are finally ready," the startup posts. "We will be ready to show off what we have done and can't wait for you all to experience it!"

Owners the menu as "a fusion of German, Irish, and Italian dishes."

Choices from executive chef Matthew McGrail, one of the business partners, include five types of sausage and bratwurst, beef short rib stew, pork loin schnitzel, lamb, scallops, a half-pound burger, and mushroom risotto cakes with ratatouille. Salads, appetizers and desserts also are available.

There's room for more than 110 diners in a space with "an industrial aesthetic," editor Brenna Houck writes at Eater.

Customers enter the space through a repurposed oil barrel that [building owner Joe] Mifsud acquired on the southwest side of the city. It features a colorful graffiti interior. Above the barrel in the interior of the restaurant is a large bell circa 1901 made by a turn-of-the-century Detroit iron factory.

The wooden chairs and stools throughout Cork & Gabel as well as the iron gates surrounding the parking lot are also from Mifsud’s collections.

The restaurant is next to Two James Spirits craft distillery, which opened in 2013.
